The Children's Environmental Health Center of the Hudson Valley specializes in advanced multidisciplinary research on the health effects of children's exposure to environmental toxins and pollutants.
It makes its findings from scientific studies available to the public and the scientific community on a not for profit basis, and helps disseminate the latest research and clinical treatment developments in the field.
The following is a brief overview of research studies conducted by the Children's Environmental Health Center of the Hudson Valley, which are supported by the Children's Health and Research Foundation, Inc.
1. Dozor A.J., Krishnan S. - Relationship Between Atmospheric and Weather Conditions and Pulmonary Function in Fhildren with Asthma.
This is a large epidemiological study examining the relationship between temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure and measurements of lung function obtained in children with asthma.
2. Valsamis C., Krishnan S., Dozor A.J. - Environmental Tobacco Smoke and Pulmonary Function Tests in Young Children with Asthma: Impulse Oscillometry and Airway Reactivity.
Evidence is mounting that the toxic effects of exposure to second hand smoke are greatedt in young children when their lungs are growing. The Center's Pediatric Pulmonary Function Laboratory can now make extremely sensitive measurements of lung function in toddlers and preschool children which previously were not possible. This study is designed to examine the effects of exposure to environmental tobacco smoke on those measurements.
3. DeLaRiva-Velasco E., Krishnan S., Dozor A.J. - Airway Inflammation and Environmental Tobacco Smoke: Cytokines in Exhaled Breath Condensate.
This is a basic laboratory study designed to help unravel the biochemical pathways that link second hand smoke to lung disease in children. In this study, the Children's Environmental Health Center of the Hudson Valley is using a new technique that may represent a breakthrough in the understanding and clinical treatment of childhood asthma. We are collecting moisture in the breath of children with asthma and testing that liquid for signs of inflammation.
4. Dozor A.J. and Balazy M. - Nitrooxidative Stress: The Efects of Environmental Tobacco Smoke on Airway Inflammation and Transarachidonic Mediators in Asthma.
This study is a collaborative effort of the staff of the Children's Environmental Health Center of the Hudson Valley and basic science researchers at New York Medical College. The purpose of this study is to better understand exactly why exposure to second hand smoke is so bad for children with asthma.
5. Dozor A.J. and Krishnan S. - The Relationship Between Exposre to Environmental Tobacco Smoke and Gastroesophogeal Reful in Children with Asthma (Substudy of SARCA: The study of Acid reflux in Children with Asthma, a Multicenter Placebo - Controlled Trial in Children with Asthma.)
The Center's pediatric pulmonology division is an American Lung Association Asthma Clinical Research Center. As such, the Children's Environmental Health Center of the Hudson Valley participates in large nationwide clinical studies of asthma. This particular national study is examining the relationship between two common problems: asthma and gastroesophageal reflux. The Children's Environmental Health Center of the Hudson Valley's substudy is designed to furhter analyze this relationship in terms of the role of exposure to second hand smoke, which is known to worsen both of these common clinical problems.
